FAQ
Everything You Need To Know
What is sintered stone and how is it made?
Sintered stone is an advanced engineered surface made by combining natural minerals under extreme heat and pressure. The process mimics how stone forms in the earth but in a fraction of the time. Using raw materials like quartz, feldspar, silica, and natural oxides, sintered stone is formed through a process called sintering, where the materials are heated to temperatures over 1,200°C. This creates a dense, durable slab that is non-porous, UV stable, heat-resistant, and scratch-resistant. Unlike quartz or traditional engineered stone, sintered stone contains no resins or binders, making it more eco-friendly and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Is sintered stone better than quartz?
Sintered stone and quartz each have strengths, but sintered stone generally offers superior durability and versatility. While quartz is durable and available in a wide range of colours, it contains resins that can discolour or break down under prolonged heat or UV exposure. In contrast, sintered stone is resin-free and highly resistant to heat, stains, scratches and sunlight, which means it can be used in outdoor kitchens, BBQ areas, or spaces exposed to direct sun. It also doesn’t require sealing and handles thermal shock better than quartz. However, quartz may still be preferred for certain interior design aesthetics due to its softer look. The best choice comes down to your specific space, usage, and design goals.
Can sintered stone be used outdoors?
Yes. One of the biggest advantages of sintered stone is its suitability for outdoor use. Unlike many natural or engineered stones that may fade, discolour, or degrade in harsh weather, sintered stone is highly UV resistant and maintains its finish even in full sun. It also resists moisture, mould and frost, making it an ideal surface for alfresco kitchens, BBQ benchtops, and exterior wall cladding. Its non-porous composition means it won’t absorb water or stain easily, and it won’t warp in hot or cold temperatures. As outdoor living spaces become more popular, sintered stone has become a go-to material for designers and homeowners looking for performance without compromise.
